Air Quality Index: Haze MY SG · Email hello@twiddlethumbstudio.com
Why is my number different from IQAir or another app?
Many apps show the US AQI, which uses different cut-offs and reacts faster, so the same air can read higher there. Haze shows the official number: Malaysia’s API from the Department of Environment, or Singapore’s PSI from NEA. That is the one quoted in the news.
What do the numbers mean?
Malaysia’s API and Singapore’s PSI use the same bands: 0–50 good, 51–100 moderate, 101–200 unhealthy, 201–300 very unhealthy, above 300 hazardous. Singapore also shows 1-hour PM2.5, which is better for deciding whether to go out right now. Tap the ⓘ on the main screen for the full explanation.
The reading is from a station far away, or looks old
Haze uses the nearest working station. DOE and NEA update about once an hour, and stations sometimes stop reporting for a while. When the newest reading is more than 3 hours old, Haze marks it as old instead of pretending it is current. If no station is within about 75 km, Haze tells you rather than showing a far-away number.
The widget isn’t updating
Open Haze once after installing so the widget knows where you are. The widget asks for a new reading about every 30 minutes, but iOS and Android decide exactly when widgets refresh, and they refresh less often in Low Power Mode or battery saver. Opening the app updates the widget straight away.
I don’t want to share my location
You don’t have to. Tap the place name on the main screen and add a place by picking a station. Even when location is on, it is rounded to about 1 km on your phone first. See the privacy policy.
How accurate is the forecast?
The 5-day forecast comes from a weather model (CAMS, through Open-Meteo), not from DOE or NEA. That is why it shows bands and never a number. Treat it as a guide to whether the next few days look better or worse.
Haze Pro, restoring and cancelling
Readings, the forecast, one saved place and every widget size are free. Pro adds every voice, every colour and more saved places. It comes as a monthly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
To restore Pro on a new phone, open the Pro screen in Haze and tap Restore purchases, signed in to the same Apple or Google account. To cancel a monthly plan on iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions. Lifetime is a one-time purchase, so there is nothing to cancel.
A health note
Haze shows official readings in a light-hearted voice. It is not medical advice. If you have asthma, heart or lung conditions, are pregnant, or are looking after young children or older family members, follow the health advisories from the Ministry of Health Malaysia or Singapore’s NEA and your doctor.
Still stuck?
Email hello@twiddlethumbstudio.com with your phone model and which city or station you are looking at. A screenshot helps.
